How to get rid of scabs on face

When acne breaks out, many have the habit of picking at their skin, which ends up developing scabs on their face. It doesn’t necessarily have to be acne breakouts; even a scratch, hickey, or a rash can lead to the formation of scabs on face. A scab is basically a hard protective layer that is formed by a natural process of your skin to shield bleeding injuries.

Whenever there is an injury on your skin, your body’s immediate response would be to clot blood and kill virulent organisms. Once blood flow stops in the wounded area, your body will start developing a scab. It takes a few hours for the scab to form completely which will then perform as a barrier protecting the healing process taking place inside. Most of the time, the healing process will end up being successful and your injury as well as the scab will be invisible within a few days or weeks. However, sometimes, the scab on your face may be so annoying that you would want to get rid of it right away, especially when you have an important event coming up in a few days. In such cases, rather than opting for expensive creams, there are some simple yet effective home remedies you could try to get rid of scabs on face.

But before you follow any of the following home remedies, be sure to check if the scab on your face has dried out completely and there is no puss formation.

Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree oil is one of the most widely used ingredients for healing cuts and scabs efficiently. Its antiseptic properties prevent bacterial infections on skin injuries.

Dip a cotton ball or a clean piece of cloth in some tea tree oil. Apply it very gently on the scab. Do not apply too much pressure on the area because the upper layer of the scab can break and start bleeding, making your injury worse. Follow this technique once or twice every day until the scab is no longer visible.

Warm Compress

This is yet another efficient remedy for getting rid of scabs. Just a simple warm compress is known to remove scabs within a few hours. This is because the moisture content from the compress softens your skin, thus loosening the scab and clearing the area completely.

Dip a clean wash cloth in warm water. Make sure the water isn’t too hot to burn your skin or too cold to make the process ineffective. Apply the compress on the affected area and press gently. Do not scrub the cloth on your skin as it can worsen the condition. Repeat the process twice a day for quick results. Warm compress is also capable of improving blood flow in the area; therefore, it also quickens the healing process.

Aloe Vera

Aloe vera is something you would come across in almost every home remedy, which is known to be good for your hair and skin as well. It is great in healing sunburns, bruises, and also cuts. It can be used to get rid of scabs on face fast. Aloe vera is known to alleviate the itching sensation you get from scabs. It also has the ability to prevent the formation of scars on your face after the injury heals.

Squeeze some gel from an aloe vera leaf. Apply a thick coating of the gel on the scab and let it rest for a couple hours or if possible, overnight. Then rinse your face with clean water. Repeat the process twice or thrice a day for faster results.

Plantain Leaves

Do not confuse this one with the banana-like fruit. Plantain leaves are filled with anti-inflammatory properties which make them a perfect choice for healing cuts, scabs, and other injuries.

Extract the juice from these leaves by crushing a few of them and apply the juice on your wound twice or thrice daily.

Apple Cider Vinegar

In addition to helping get rid of scabs, apple cider vinegar is also known to cure various other skin conditions. It is also known to augment cell growth and maintain pH balance.

Dilute a few ml. of apple cider vinegar with some water. Dip a cotton ball in the diluted mixture and apply it on the scab. Leave it for about 15 to 20 minutes and then wash your face with lukewarm water. Continue practicing the method regularly for good results.

Petroleum Jelly

If you are looking for a treatment to remove just the scabs on your skin, then this is perhaps one of the most efficient.

Before using petroleum jelly, such as Vaseline, on your skin, make sure that the wounded areas are not bleeding or letting out puss. Apply a coating of petroleum jelly on the scab and leave it. It will moisten the area and prevent bacterial infections. Most importantly, petroleum jelly can loosen scabs and help get rid of them faster.

When it comes to scabs, there are certain things you should and shouldn’t do. Following is a list of things you should do:

  • Always keep the wounded area clean in order to avoid infections. Cleanse the area on a daily basis with soap and warm water. Pat dry and apply an anti-septic or anti-bacterial cream or ointment on the area.
  • Regularly inspect the wounded area for puss, blood, and other symptoms of infection. Scabs on face usually occur due to acne, which doesn’t lead to infection in most cases. However, if your scab is due to an injury, say a cut, perform regular inspections.
  • Do not pick at your skin. Leave it alone and give it some time to heal on its own.

If none of these techniques work for you, the condition of your injury may be worse, so consult a dermatologist and get prescription medications.
